Hackleman Court Renovation Phase 2

October 10, 2012 – we now have 4 permanent pickleball courts at Hackleman Park in Albany – well almost!

Phase 2 of renovating the old Hackleman tennis court into pickleball courts was completed on Oct 10, 2012.  There was 1 day of power washing, 1 day of patching and applying the black “resurfacer” over the worst areas to smooth out the court surface, 1 day of painting the courts and 1 day to line the courts.

Since the Fall rains are predicted to hit in a few days and we are moving inside to the Boys and Girls Club, we did not install the nets and posts.  That will be a quick spring 2013 project.

With the proceeds from our Rally In The Valley Pickleball Tournament, which included our generous donations, the city added $500 so we were able to finish the courts this year and essentially complete the renovation.  Overall, we could not be happier with the results and we will have a nice venue for pickleball play here in Albany.

We do have a few items left and hopefully we can fund these through tournament proceeds next year.   A few items:  cross fence with gates, repair some of the chain link fencing, provide a pickleball sign and possibly provide some spectator/player upgrades.  We are also working with the city to provide input for future pickleball courts in their master plan.

First Annual Rally In The Valley Pickleball Tournament – 2012

The First Annual Rally In The Valley Pickleball Tournament was held at West Albany High School August 24-26, 2012.

Our tournament had 96 players which seemed significant to us.  With additional visitors we estimate we had 150 people at our tournament each day providing a significant economic impact to Albany businesses over the three days.  We drew players from all over the Northwest and from as far away as Edmonton, Alberta and Amarillo, TX plus many from the extended Willamette Valley from Vancouver to Medford and Bend to Newport.   We played 66 matches Saturday and 74 matches Sunday on 11 courts.

Any proceeds from the tournament went to pickleball court improvements at Eleanor Hackleman Park where we will have four permanent pickleball courts by Mid October.  The court improvements are a partnership between the City of Albany and the Albany Pickleball Club.

The project would not have been possible without help from our generous donors. Their donations to the tournament and/or court work allowed us to put on a very successful tournament and use the proceeds to further our renovations on the court.

Hackleman Court Renovation Phase 1

(Writing this post a little after the fact to document the efforts that went into the court renovations.)

Between July 7 and August 17, the Albany Pickleball Club members spent many hours power washing, patching, painting and setting nets and posts on the South half of the court at Hackleman Park.  This was Phase 1 in our renovation of the tennis court into 4 permanent pickleball courts.   The City of Albany provided the patching and painting materials and one set of net/posts for the project.  The Club purchased one set of net/posts and provided all the labor to get the work done.

This was a huge amount of work by the Club and everyone came together to get the job done.  As per our agreement with the City, the proceeds from the Rally In The Valley Tournament were used as well to purchase needed supplies and materials.

The project would not have been possible without help from our generous donors.  Their donations to the tournament and/or court work allowed us to put on a very successful tournament and use the proceeds to further our renovations on the court.
